‘Jeopardy!’ playing fulfills the long-time goal for Des Moines’ Ty Patton

A Des Moines resident got what he called the opportunity of a lifetime to be on “Jeopardy!” recently.

He can’t talk about how he did it, but Patton said he got lucky playing the game.

How did Ty Patton get the chance to be on ‘Jeopardy!’ to appear?

Patton said playing on Jeopardy has been a lifelong goal, but it was something he started getting serious about a few years ago. Now 43, he said he realized this was a goal he had to act on if he wanted it to become a reality.

Some people take more than a decade to land a spot on the show, but Patton said he was lucky to have a “relatively quick process.” After an online test, a series of proctored tests, online auditions, meetings with producers and more, Patton finally got the call about two and a half years later.

Patton, who moved to Des Moines in 2012, describes himself as a naturally curious person and said he is always studying.

“I did a lot of preparation. I thought I had a pretty good idea of ​​what to expect,” he said. “There were no big surprises, it was just an honor to be on that stage.”

He credited his father for his interest in “Jeopardy!” and trivia games. The couple often watched the game show together on the couch growing up in Youngstown, Ohio. He was able to take his father with him during the game.

In addition to his father, Patton also brought his wife Katie to the filming. He felt very lucky that they ended up on set together.

“It’s absolutely surreal,” Patton said. “I tried to take it all in.”
