St. Cloud, Meire Grove Bands visit Spalt, Germany

SPALT, GERMANY (WJON news) — The joint trip of the St.Cloud Municipal Band and Meire Grove Band to Germany is in full swing.

The trip got off to a bumpy start on Thursday and Friday with a turbulent flight from MSP to Detroit, over 30 minutes delay from Detroit to Frankfurt, Germany, some lost luggage and another over an hour delay for the bus ride from Frankfurt to Spalt.

Once in Spalt, the band checked into their three different hotels and then attended a city welcome reception. Some members stayed after the reception to watch the German national football team’s match against Scotland, which Germany won 5-1.

Saturday was a fun day for the group with a walking tour of Spalt and a tour of the city brewery. After the tours the band had a few hours for lunch and to explore Spalt. At 5:30 PM the group met with Spalt Stadkapelle, Spalt’s city band, to rehearse for that evening’s concert. The concert took place in the more than 800 year old St. Emmeram Church. People filled the church to watch the joint concert, with the bands playing a few pieces together as one large group at the end.

After the show there was an exchange of gifts between the directors and then a short reception before calling it a day.

On Sunday it’s more music, as some members of the group march in the firefighters’ parade with the Spalt band.
