The number is one of two Glossolalia songs in which Crover collaborates with the guitarist Then Southwick, his old friend and bandmate from Altamont. “He’s one of those guys who was always very easy to write songs with.says Crover. With a title that is the name of The velvet surface member Doug Yule With a nod to the holiday season in which it was written, the song combines Southwick’s rolling mid-tempo riffs with a story that Crover, in another Velvets hat tip, describes as a “vampire story “Venus In Furs.”

Southwick isn’t the only friend to show up Glossolaliawith contributions from Sound Garden‘s Kim Thayil (lead guitar on “I Quit” and “Rings”), Ty Segall (lead guitar on “Spoiled Daisies” and “I Waited Forever”), Pin‘S Rob Crow (“Don’t Worry About It”, “Rings” and “I Waited Forever”) and Tom Waits’ unhinged intonation intro on the title track.

The result is Glossolalia, Crover’s third LP under his own name and perhaps his most pointed statement yet as a solo artist. Overall, the new album shows that just as the Melvins continue to grow and evolve into their fourth decade, Crover is also actively taking new steps as a solo artist. Amid Waits’ inspired chatter, Segall and Thayil’s glorious shredding, and more, what stands out throughout the record is the solidity of Crover’s vision. “It’s just some kind of extra credit,he says about having a solo outlet in addition to his main band – but as this record shows, his overall aesthetic hits just as hard as his legendary drumming thunder.

Glossolalia is now available for pre-order on Hot Pink vinyl, CD and VIP “Lickety Split Pink” Vinyl, limited to 400 hand-numbered copies with a bonus flexi-disc.
