Nanaimo athletes’ winners at high school athletics provincials

Six Nanaimo teens win BC championships

Nanaimo youth had the rare opportunity to compete in high school athletics provincials in their hometown.

Athletes from all of Nanaimo’s high schools qualified for the BC High School Track and Field Championships held June 6 to 8 at the Rotary Bowl stadium.

Six Nanaimo youth won provincial championships that week. Nanaimo District Secondary School’s senior 4×400 meter relay team of Lydia Paris, Ava Gauthier, Brea Gillette and Haley Martin won gold with a provincial record time of 3:59.78, beating York House and Oak Bay Secondary.

Also, Dover Bay’s Rhys Beaudoin won gold in the junior 800m final in a time of 1:58.92, and Cedar Secondary’s Carter Cunning won gold in the Grade 8 boys’ 800m in 2:08.67.

Other top three results at the provincial championships included Paris who came second in the senior girls’ high jump, NDSS’s Lucy Russell who came second in the senior girls’ pole vault, Wellington Secondary’s Gavin Esleyer finished second in the 400m for juniors for boys, and Beaudoin came second in the senior pole vault. junior boys’ 1,500-meter steeplechase, and Katelyn Putz of John Barsby Secondary placed third in the senior girls’ hammer throw.

Multi-sport provincials were held on the mainland a week earlier and NDSS’s Tessa Bell came second in the junior girls’ heptathlon and NDSS’s Sacha Therrien came third in the senior boys’ decathlon.
