The country of Hawaii has a very complex history and it is all well preserved in this palace. This palace is the only real royal palace in the United States that has existed since 1882. The palace features a luxurious building and the only building in the world built in the style of ‘Florentine America’.

“This palace has had electricity before (the White Building). But (its great) influence on the Hawaiian people cannot be underestimated. Iolani Palace is a symbol of Hawaii as its own nation and where our last queen (Queen Lili ‘uokalani) was imprisoned after the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893,” Eates said.

Visitors can tour the first and second floors, which contain the living room and bedroom, as well as the prison room of Queen Lili’uokalani, where she was held under house arrest for nearly eight months after her government was overthrown by the US.

2. Best Hidden Permata: Shangri La

The former heir to American tobacco and socialite Oahu Knowledge Duke, Shangri La is a 60-year-old Duke artwork and furnishings spread over a 14,000-square-foot site consisting of residences, playgrounds, swimming pools and outdoor terraces.

“A stunning and fantastic architecture and room like her bedroom is reflected and almost sparkling with the blue ocean below,” said Estes.

The famous Duke arrived in Honolulu in 1935 and befriended native Duke Kahanamoku of Hawaii. Duke Kabanamoku is a pioneer who popularized surfing. Duke died in 1993 and in 2002 a 10-acre (4.9 hectare) plantation on the seafront opened as a community museum showcasing inspired Islamic designs, furnishings and architecture.

3. The best view in the country of Hawaii is at Nu’uanu Pali Lookout

Honolulu is known for its city panorama and sea views over Diamond Head Crater, but for the best views of eastern Honolulu without having to climb anything, Nu’uanu Pali Lookout is the place.

“It’s a great place for locals to get out of town and show visitors the east side of Oahu,” Estes said of the observation point with spectacular views. Many locals have been coming there since they were children.

Located in the northeastern city of Honolulu, the location offers beautiful views of the Ko’olau Mountains and the east side, often referred to as the direction of the Oahu winds, and visitors should be prepared for high winds.

Pali Lookout also has an epic yet deadly history. In 1795, this now peaceful site served as a battlefield where king, warrior, and diplomat King Kamehameha I won the Battle of Nu’uanu, a victory that united Oahu and sent hundreds of soldiers straight off the 1,000-foot cliffs to their deaths.

While the winding observation point and Nu’uanu Pali Drive provide beautiful views of the city, the location is also the origin of some of the most disturbing stories in Oahu, including the Legend of Hawai’i’s Night Marchers, the spirits of ancient Hawaiian warriors who roam to Oahu in the dark and never look into your eyes or you will face sudden death.
