Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 22 Review

With the teleportation circle to the sixth layer found, the party was ready to take the final step towards finding Zenith. But what awaits them across the threshold is a terror for which no one is prepared Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 22, “Parents.”

When the party steps through the final teleportation circle, they are treated to a cavernous hall. A hydra is rolled up at the end. The size and power of this enormous monster are immediately impressed on the viewer as it rises and unfolds its many heads. The beast feels as powerful as mythology originally described it.

But as the creature roars, another element enters the room to draw the party’s attention. There, behind the beast and trapped in crystal, lies Zenith. With his wife in sight, Paul (Toshiyuki Morikawa) loses all control and recklessly charges forward, to the horror of his party members.

Paul’s anger when he sees his wife captured by the monster is steeped in primal cruelty. His screams as he attacks his enemy are both felt and heard. As his party struggles to catch up, he blindly hacks at the hydra’s heads. To the horror of Rudeus (Yumi Uchiyama) and Roxy (Konomi Kohara), they soon discover that the creature is protected from magic, making long-range support not an option. Elinalise (Rie Tanaka) can barely save him from a fatal blow thanks to her strong shield arm. As the hydra begins to regenerate its lost heads, the party chooses to fall back, though they have to practically drag Paul out of the battle.

Mushoku Tensei Unemployed Reincarnation Season 2, Episode 22

Once back through the teleportation circle, Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 22 shows Paul and Rudeus having a heated argument. Paul lashes out at Rudeus for his calm, aloof attitude. His mother is a prisoner, and in Paul’s eyes, Rudeus doesn’t seem to care. However, this is far from the truth. As Rudeus explains, losing his temper doesn’t gain him anything.

But inwardly he also recognizes that his bond with Zenith is not as deep as you might think. Despite her being his mother, he hasn’t seen her in over ten years. In addition, much of the parenting work was done by Lilia (Lynn, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch of Mercury), and Roxy took care of his studies. So while Rudeus cares for Zenith, his bond is not nearly as deep as Paul’s. Although it’s not stated here, it’s easy to assume that part of Paul’s deep-seated need to save Zenith also stems from his guilt over betraying her all those years ago.

Once everyone is calm, the party puts their heads together to come up with a plan to defeat the hydra. Roxy provides details from her magical studies to help them overcome the magical defenses, and Rudues proposes a plan of attack drawn from Greek myth. It’s not the most solid source, but it does make sense. With the plan established and everyone’s role identified, the party returns to the hydra.

Mushoku Tensei: Unemployed Reincarnation Season 2, Episode 22

Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 22‘s second fight has the same intensity as his first, but in a much more controlled manner. It’s fascinating to see how the group coordinates their attacks as they undermine the hydra threat. Even when their plan is complete, the monster still poses a dangerous threat. The many cracking jokes and furious fire breath are delivered with a powerful visual touch.

When the beast reaches its last head, it lunges at Rudeus, who is saved by Paul’s quick reactions. Rudeus stares at the hydra’s eye, just a few feet away, and lunges at the monster, driving his arm into its eye. He casts his rock nail spell with his hand in the monster’s skull. Several cone-shaped protrusions burst from the creature’s head as it roars and shoots its head away. This sudden movement jerks Rudeus to his feet and pulls him into the air until his arm finally lets go, causing him to fall to the ground. As he falls, Roxy casts a fire spell to prevent the monster from healing his wounds, sealing the hydra’s fate.

As Rudeus lands on the ground, we see that his entire left arm has been torn off. In his pain, he manages to stumble through a healing spell. Not strong enough to regrow the arm, but it can stop the bleeding, removing any danger to his life. He is greeted by a new horror as he rises to his feet. Everyone is completely silent and stares at Paul’s severed torso. Again, Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 22 conveys the pain and horror of the team extremely well. Rudeus’ complicated feelings towards Paul feel lost in the sudden pain of seeing his father die.

Mushoku Tensei: Unemployed Reincarnation Season 2, Episode 22

With the hydra gone, the crystal that held Zenith shatters. Their goal has been accomplished, so what’s left of the group heads back to town. When they arrive, they are initially greeted with cheers when Lilia and the others see Zenith with them. However, when he realizes that Paul is absent, the cheerfulness turns to sadness. The moment plays out with little dialogue, as the show lets music convey the character’s feelings along with the visuals to the viewer.

If Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Episode 22 closes, we see Zenith finally regain consciousness, but something is wrong. She does not seem to recognize Rudeus, and her ability to speak is also absent. Whether these are temporary hiatus or ongoing issues is left unsaid, giving viewers a gripping hook that will have them eagerly awaiting the next episode.
