The Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators edged the Baton Rouge Rougarou doubleheader Saturday at Barbe High School to get back above .500 in the Texas Collegiate League.

Jake Smith (Rosepine HS / Louisiana Tech) had a great day at the plate, driving in the go-ahead runs in the first game and bringing home the winning run in the second game.

In the first game, the Gators (8-7) trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning and exploded for six runs. With the score tied at 3-3 after Aaron Morgan’s (Colorado Christian) two-RBI single, Smith hit a 3-run homerun out of the park for a 6-3 lead. It was his first home run of the season.

Both teams were limited to seven innings in the doubleheader, but the second game went into extra innings, forcing the teams to use the international tiebreaker, which placed a runner on second base to start each half-inning.

The Rougarou (7-6) scored one in the top of the eighth inning, but the Gators came back in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to win the game, including Smith’s walkoff bunt single.

Travis Phelps (Lamar) earned the win in the first game after allowing three earned runs on three hits in three innings after replacing starter Kemonni Pullard. Carson Laws (Texas State) was credited with a save in a scoreless seventh inning, striking out the batter.

In the second game, Hayden Harmon (Louisiana Tech) pitched the eighth inning to get the win, allowing one earned run on zero hits with one strikeout.

The Gators and Rougarou play again today at Golbsy Field in Baton Rouge at 7 p.m
