Man dies after jumping from Des Moines bridge into river, police say

A man has died after being rescued from the Des Moines River after apparently jumping from the Jackson Street Bridge on Saturday.

According to a news release from the Des Moines Police Department, personnel responded to reports of someone jumping from the bridge on Saturday around 6 p.m. The man was spotted unconscious in the Racoon River.

The Des Moines Fire Department’s flood team pulled it from the Des Moines River near the Southeast Sixth Street bridge.

Despite lifesaving efforts and continued care at UnityPoint – Methodist Medical Center, the man died, police said.

The man’s identity has not been released. Detectives are actively investigating.
