Baltimore Ravens coach speaks about son’s dedication to college

Football is a family business for Baltimore Ravens running backs coach Willie Taggart, and part of that business involves staying close to home.

Last week, JT Taggart, the younger of Willie’s two sons, committed to play college football near Maryland. With an imposing presence at 6-8, 229 pounds and an 81-inch wingspan, JT, who caught 21 passes for 304 yards and four touchdowns last season as a junior in high school, should be a valuable asset in tight times for coach Mike Locksley and the Terrapins.

With Willie speaking to the media this week during the mandatory mini-camp, the topic of his son’s dedication would naturally come up. Needless to say, he is very happy that his son is going to a good program.

“I want someone to finish what we started. And again, as I told Coach Locksley, ‘I’m giving him to you. I want you to take him to the finish now and help him continue to develop, like my wife and I have done it (so far),” Taggart told reporters on Wednesday. “We want it to stay that way, and the football part will take care of itself; from that standpoint, he’ll do his part.” But I want Coach Locksley to help him become a man.”

Willie, a former head coach at Oregon and Florida State, among others, has some experience with Locksley from his time in college. While some of that experience comes from the struggle for recruits, he clearly has great respect for the leader of the Terrapins.

it is exciting. It’s probably more exciting for (his) mother – than anything else – which makes it easy and happy for me,” Taggart said. “(When) mom is happy, everyone is happy. But Maryland is also a great program. Coach Locksley has done a great job there.”

Willie had been coaching at the collegiate level since 1999, but after being let go from Florida Atlantic after the 2022 season, he decided to head to Baltimore and ultimately make the jump to the NFL. He was already a key part of the league’s best rushing attack last season, and now he has perhaps the league’s best in recent years at his disposal in Derrick Henry.
