CBS Colorado’s “McMeen in the Middle” documents historic immigration at a Denver school

The story is told through the voices of the McMeen community, its resilient teachers, parents, students and supporters.

Viewers learn about the traumatic journeys children endured as they traveled through seven countries to arrive in Denver, and the effect of that trauma on classroom behavior. A family shares the challenges of transition for their young children, the struggle to obtain legal status and make ends meet, and the threat of deportation.

The documentary chronicles teachers’ extraordinary dedication to student learning and well-being. While many in the McMeen community are finding creative ways to support the newcomers, others are choosing to leave school for a more stable environment.
