Which Colorado Grocery Stores Will Be Sold If The Kroger-Albertsons Merger Goes Through. Here’s The List

No one knows for sure if or when Kroger (which owns King Soopers) and Albertsons (which owns Safeway) will merge. It’s been two years since they announced their plan. Then the Federal Trade Commission and several states, including Colorado, sued to stop it. Now Kroger and Albertsons have released a list of the stores they plan to sell to C&S Wholesale Grocers ahead of a lawsuit in August. Selling the stores will prevent layoffs or closures, the companies say.

Under the latest plan, most of the stores will be in the western United States, where Kroger and Albertsons have the most overlap. Of the 579 supermarkets being sold, 91 are in Colorado and includes all Colorado Safeway locations (owned by Albertsons). No King Soopers or City Market locations are being sold.

C&S retains the rights to use the Safeway brand name in Colorado.

According to Kroger and Albertsons, C&S has promised that “no stores will close as a result of the merger and that all frontline associates will remain employed.”

Whether the merger goes through depends on the FTC and likely the courts. Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser has filed a lawsuit to block the merger, claiming it would hurt smaller communities and create monopolies.

Many industry insiders question whether C&S can successfully operate such a large number of supermarkets and whether it may have to close stores in smaller markets or with nearby alternatives (such as King Soopers).
